Dhaka, Nov 14 (V7N) – A man suspected of setting fire to a parked bus in Mirpur’s Beribadh area died after falling into the Turag River while being chased by locals, police said on Thursday night. Another suspect was detained and handed over to police.

Shah Ali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Golam Azam said the incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. near Tamanna Park when two individuals allegedly set fire to a bus belonging to Kiranmala Paribahan that was parked beside the road. As residents confronted them, both attempted to flee. One suspect fell into the river during the chase and was later recovered dead. Police said his identity has not yet been confirmed.

Sub-inspector (SI) Anwar of the same police station said that the second suspect, identified as Rudra Muhammad, 20, was caught by locals while trying to escape and later taken into police custody.

Witnesses reported that the two suspects attempted to ignite the parked bus, Dhaka Metro B-13-1262, before trying to run away. Locals gave chase, capturing one of them, while the other jumped into the Turag River in an attempt to escape. He was later retrieved unconscious and sent to a hospital, where he was declared dead.

A fire service unit responded to the scene and brought the blaze under control. The fire severely damaged the vehicle, burning the seats and shattering the windows.
